A thin but proud-looking blue jay chimes those words as he flaps towards you, eyes glinting with excitement."What better home could a bird want? Such an absurd question even I don't know the answer to! Now, let me be your guide to the entwining branches and lush leaves we call home! Shall we?" Then, his happiness fades.
"Or at least, that's what I would be saying to you a few years ago, but we have hit some hard times recently... Ah, c-come now, just let me show you around."
Tired and eager to find a place to rest your weary wings, you follow as he shows you around his home.
The history of the Plumis Praetus
The Plumis Praetus were a long-standing group of proud, powerful birds, renowned for their abilities in the air. Residing in the luscious forest of Viridu, they each led fair, healthy lives under the leadership of a ruler, referred to as the Aurestra, who would eventually be surpassed by a bird of that Aurestra's choosing upon his or her death. This bird was usually the one the ruler most trusted to hold a fair, peaceful reign, and would care for his or her subjects. This new Aurestra would be given a golden mask, named The Sigil of Light, that symbolized their kingship. And that was how the tradition went for centuries.
Four years ago was an event known as 'The Siege of the Black Tailed Raiders'. The Black Tailed Raiders, often shortened to BTR by the populace, were a rival community neighbouring the Plumis Praetus. For many years the group was easily held at bay by the skill of the Plumis Praetus' warriors, but then came the assassination of Aurestra Diuras. Diuras was murdered by a BTR spy masquerading as a warrior for the Plumis Praetus. This was supposed to make way for the BTR's leader to take Diruas's place, but the spy took it for himself, and slaughtered the remaining members of the BTR with the exception of a few of his close comrades. The spy, a bat hawk named Rose-Singer, forced the citizens of Viridu into a harshly run dictatorship, and it has been like that since.

The Territory
As mentioned before, the Plumis Praetus take refuge in a forest known as Viridu. It is mainly comprised of pines, oaks, birch trees, and the occasional fruit tree, with some areas being more sparse and some more tightly-knit. The main area is the dense woodland surrounding the forest's tallest, thickest tree, an age old oak where the important birds reside, such as the ruler and his or her mate and family, the royal council, the chief, and a few others. The inhabitants refer to the tree as Vilium. The trees surrounding this oak are home to the members of the group. There are some other important locations too, though.
The sage and his or her subordinates stay in the branches of a pine, who's branches have been modified to keep supplies and house patients. There is a herb farm located at the base of this tree, which only the sage and his or her aides may enter.
The smith, who creates weapons, armour, and other tools, works at the base of Vilium in a small cave dug out between the roots.
There is the gathering area, a clearing to the west of the main area with an abandoned shack that is used for meetings and announcements and other important events.
The training clearing, used to prepare young fighters for the battlefield.
There are others too, but you'll have to find them for yourself!

(Ranks with numbers beside them indicate a limited amount of spaces. Ones with no number are unlimited.)
Royalty
Aurestra(1): The ruler of the Plumis Praetus, once fairly chosen by the Aurestra and his/her trusted ones before the assassination of Diuras. Holder of The Sigil of Light, a golden mask that symbolizes kingship. If he/she takes a mate, this bird is also considered a ruler, but cannot make large decisions without the word of the real Aurestra.
High Adviser(1): The Aurestra's right hand bird, and most trusted friend. He/she is head of the council and holds a lot of power.
The Council(5): A group of between two and five trusted birds, with the exception of the High Adviser, who hold a decent amount of power and help to guide the Aurestra with decisions.
Other Positions of Power
The Chief(1): Head of the army, overseer of all battles, training, and other things relating to the protection of Viridu.
The Sage(1): The one in control of the health and welfare of the citizens. Up to four healers work under him/her along with any trainees.
The Workers
Scouts/Watchers(6): They either protect the forest by keeping an eye out for danger from towers spread throughout the area or they fly ahead in battle to see what the enemy is up to.
Senior Warriors(10): These are either long time fighters or battlers with exceptional skill in combat. Either way, they are highly respected.
Warriors: The main fighters.
Guards: The ones who patrol the city, keeping an eye out for troublemakers. Not trained excessively in combat, but knows enough to take down typical criminals.
Smiths(2): The one who makes the weapons. Typically quite skilled in combat his/herself.
Healers(5): Working under the Sage, they take care of the sick and wounded.
Trainees: Young birds training to join a profession. There may be up to 3 healer apprentices but unlimited warrior apprentices.
Citizens
Members: The majority of the population is made up of these birds.
Fledgelings: The young birds. Adulthood is marked by learning the skill of flight.
