"You may learn something while training with him, don't forget that. Apprentices learn from their mentors, and from other apprentices. The two of you may have to work together," he responded to her. Hawk looked down to see a caterpillar crawl onto his paw, he lifted it up and looked at the bug.
"Your flowers are growing well, Briarthorn. I wish you could see them. Well, you probably could from Starclan," Soul commented. With a small sigh, he continued talking. "I hope you can tell me more about how Ashclan is doing, or tell me why Starclan chose Burningsky. I don't get it, Ashclan was in it's prime when we were warriors. Give me a sign, or talk to her, please." He looked up at the sky before looking back down. "Sometimes I wish I was dead, then maybe I could see everyone again."
Storm shook his head, standing up as well. "All I have left to say, is just expect this journey to be a bit of an oddity."

Mintpaw also looked at the caterpillar, intrigued by the furry, worm-like bug. "Yeah, yeah, I guess so. My mentor tells me that all the time too when I complain about the apprentices I don't like," she remarked, flicking her ears.
Burningsky entered the camp and walked into the medicine cat's den. "Hello, flowerfur? I've got your stupid plants," she called, and the medicine cat took them from her with a few words of gratitude before shooing her out of the den. She sighed and hastily left the camp again, not in the mood to be surrounded by a swarm of insect-brains.
Hollowpaw nodded. "Very well. I'll brace myself for anything that might happen. It's been nice speaking with you, Storm. Farewell." The long-legged apprentice dipped his head and padded away.

Hawk nodded, his eyes still on the bug. "There was two other apprentices when I was one. We would always challenge each other in a few things. We wrestled mainly, but we challenged each other at swimming, climbing, even going into fox dens. Somehow, we managed to chase the fox out of the territory from that." He chuckled at the memory.
Soul stood up and stretched. "Well, I must get going, I have a kit to raise. I'm happy to be raising one, even if it isn't our own. Well, see you later Briarthorn." With that, he climbed out of the ravine and went through the tunnels. When he exited the tunnels, he started running.
Storm chuckled, "He'll know what the true meaning of that is soon." He turned and walked back to the Gathering Island, stopping to swim in a stream.

Mintpaw watched the bug, resisting the temptation to prod it. Then she heard about the fox and she looked up, eyes widening with admiration. "Oh, wow, a fox? Really? That's so cool!" she exclaimed, ears perked. "Was it scary? How big was the fox?"
(I suppose I'm done posting with the other two XP)

"Two warriors big, if I remember right," Hawk said. He smiled as he remembered the memory. "The other two apprentices, Clawpaw and Snakepaw at the time, dared me to go into a fox den. Snakepaw, her warrior name was Snakestripe, was sour after I easily beat her in a practice battle, taunted me and called me names. Clawpaw, his warrior name was Clawfur, wanted to show he was braver. I accepted the challenged and walked into the den with my head held high. The den reeked of fox as I continued to go into the den. Eventually, I had to stop when the scent was at it's strongest. I knew then, that I wasn't alone."

Mintpaw nodded eagerly, bouncing on her paws. "Oh, that's so scary! What happened next?" Her eyes occasionally drifted from Hawk to the caterpillar he was holding, but mostly, her focus stayed on him.

"The fox was there, sleeping and unaware of my presence. Being the Cedarclan apprentice I was, I unsheathed my claws and attacked. 'Get off our territory mouse-dung!' I yowled, slashing my claws through it's hide. The fox snarled and rushed for me. Knowing I couldn't do it alone, which I wanted to mind you, I ran out. Clawpaw and Snakepaw looked at me with wide eyes as the fox chased me out. 'Let's teach this fox not to live in Cedarclan,' I yelled to them. Grins appeared on their faces and they unsheathed their claws, they nodded." Hawk held up his other paw, his claws unsheathed.
"The three of us lashed out at the fox, receiving small wounds as we coordinated our attacks. Clawpaw distracted the fox, clawing his nose and muzzle. Snakepaw striked the fox's legs and hide. Me? I managed to get on its back and attack from there. The fox shook me off after a few moments, running off when I hit the ground. The three of us yowled victoriously as we watched it run, its pelt soaked in blood. When we turned, our leader and our mentors stood there. We shocked the entire clan as we told out story. We even received our warrior names. It was the greatest day of my life!"

Mintpaw's expression was full of admiration and wonder. "You're so cool! I don't know any apprentices brave enough to do that! Is everyone in Cedarclan like that?" she asked, imagining the tough, cold Cedarclanners battling off foxes and a swarm of other frightening animals.

"Some are like that, but I'm not sure if the clan changed since I was in it. I'll have to ask Dawnscar when I see him," Hawk finished, his ears perking up as he heard rapid footsteps. Soul appeared, panting as he slowed down.
"There you are Hawk, and hello there Mintpaw. How was your day today you two?" Soul sat down next to Hawk, turning his head to smell the lavender.
"It's been calming. Did a practice battle with Mintpaw. It went well, but ended short since she toppled into a bush," Hawk said, flicking his tail.
"Really? That's great! It isn't everyday you do a little battle with an apprentice, Hawk!" Soul responded happily, which Hawk replied with a grunt.

"Hello Soul!" Mintpaw greeted him happily, smiling. "Today is great, because I don't have any training! So I went for a walk, and found Hawk! He told me a super cool story about when he fought a fox!" Then her cheery demeanour sank a little and she muttered, "I really did try to avoid the bush..."

"You did your best Mintpaw! Hawk doesn't challenge just anyone either," Soul said, giving a reassuring smile.
"So how did your day go?" Hawk asked. He gave Soul a questioning look when his smile faltered.
"I talked to Burningsky, and talked to Briarthorn," Soul said quietly, hanging his head.
Hawk nudged him with his head. "Say no more. Burningsky isn't the best cat to talk to. And you went to see your mate's grave, your haven."

(i ship hawk and soul and you cant stop me) Mintpaw watched the two of them talk, a frown forming on her face. Part of her wanted to ask about Soul and his past mate, but she felt like it probably wasn't the best idea. "Burningsky is a little mean, isn't she? I hope she isn't like that the whole time she's with us."

(I do too, don't worry, I did it on purpose)
"I don't even know why Starclan even chose her. Heck, I want someone to talk to her about why she acts like that," Soul responded.
Hawk looked at Mintpaw. "Go ahead and ask him. It won't get to Soul, not very much anyway."

(*SQUEAL*)
Mintpaw, reassured by Hawk, decided to ask. "You had a mate? What happened to her?" She was still worried the question might be a bit rude or forward, but she went with it.

Soul hesitated, "S-She fell into the ravine during a battle with Cedarclan. Thawpelt, a mouse-dung Ashclan warrior, pardon my language, pushed her in. He didn't like me, or my friends. I don't know why he hated me, but he and his friends ambushed me once when we where apprentices. Three of his friends left him and joined us, but I guess his hatred grew because of that.
"During the battle, she had fallen and was clinging to the side of the cliff. I was running over to help her when Thawpelt appeared, grinning madly and clawing her paws. Her grip loosened because of it and she fell. I didn't get to her in time..."
Hawk decided to continue for his friend. "Moons later, Ebonyblaze, who became Ebonystar, decided that the grey tom needed to be stopped. So he sent Soul to get him. When Soul found Thawpelt, the warrior was wounded from tangling with a Cedarclan patrol. The tom stood next to the ravine, the same that took many other cats lives, including Briarthorn. So, Soul attacked him, making Thawpelt eventually cling to the edge. Soul did... a few things to the hanging warrior, before sending the tom to his death. That was before we embarked on our journey."

Mintpaw listened, looking at Soul with a dim, sad look in her eyes. "Oh... That's..." She wasn't sure what to say. She had heard tales of death and grief from her clanmates, but this story was among the most awful that had ever reached the young she-cat's ears. She shifted her gaze to Hawk, shuffling her paws. "It sounds like you all went through so many tough times."

Soul sighed, "When me and Ashpaw were kits, our parents disappeared and were found in Starclan. Ashpaw died in her first battle, killed with a bite to the throat, then Briarthorn-"
Hawk put a paw on his muzzle. "Shut it, you're getting depressed all over again."

Mintpaw watched them. Just looking at Soul made her feel sad. "You don't need to tell me." She put on a smile. "Don't you know? People who love you want to see you happy, no matter if they're standing right next to you or if they're all the way up in Starclan. So you should be happy, no matter what!" She lifted her head high, hoping she could put a smile on his face too.

Soul nodded, nearly jumping when he felt something snuggle into his side. He used his tail to cover the kit that had gotten to his side, that's when he realized how close he was to the lavender bush. "Yeah, I know. It's just hard to know that everyone you know is up in Starclan, a place I can't get to or dream to." He sighed at this and smiled slightly. "But I know they're watching me, hoping that I live happily."
Hawk chuckled, "I see why Starclan chose you Mintpaw. You're supportive and keep others to strive. I'm glad you're coming with us." His smile disappeared quickly. "I don't say that often, so keep that to yourself, you hear?"

Seeing Soul smile made her forced smile vanish and be replaced with a very real one. "That's right! And don't forget that!" Then she looked over at Hawk, chuckling. "Thanks! I promise I won't tell anyone that you're actually a big softy. Well, maybe I'll tell one or two people..." She seemed to think hard about this, wondering who she could tell that would make the biggest deal out of it, and then she looked at Hawk and let out a nervous giggle. "Uh, nope! Just kidding, I won't tell anyone..heh!"
