Obscure's eyes lit up at a certain cloud, as if he was seeing it as something funny, or maybe something that he liked. Then another one went by and he frowned, the amused sparkle fading.

Jay glanced at him when he frowned. "Is something on your mind?" she asked, not turning her head to look at him

Obscure pointed to his head. Then he crouched as low as he could, as if trying to make himself smaller. Finally he flicked his ears, lashed his tail, and his whiskers twitched, things cats do. Then he looked at Jay to see if she understood.
(Your hint, if you don't get it: Mind, small, cat.)

Obscure re-did the series of gestures. He pointed to his head, then to himself, then crouched and twitched his whiskers.

Obscure shook his head and shrugged, but not as a no.
Nothing really bad happened when he was a kit. Just the memories of being with family made him feel depressed.
