Hawk flicked his tail, keeping cautious of the area around him. "Well excuse me, but I'm always like this," he said quietly. Sun held her head high as she walked, making sure no scents were out of place.

"Oh, whatever, fine," Mintpaw grumbled under her breath as she started focusing on her surroundings, ears pricked and nose alert. Hollowpaw followed Sun closely, looking around and swivelling his ears this way and that.

Hawk looked back at Mintpaw before looking forward again. "Have you decided on your mentor yet? Or are you content of me filling that role?" he asked, sniffing a bush before hissing in disgust. "Something died in there, literally."
Sun stopped and lowered her head. "Climb a tree, something's up ahead. I'll be behind you."

Mintpaw decided to avoid sniffing the death bush. "Yeah, actually. I think I'd like you as my mentor," she responded, a smile on her face.
Hollowpaw sighed, looking up at the nearest tree. "This really isn't my forte," he warned her before attempting to climb up the thick trunk. He made it up about a foot before he found himself stuck in an awkward position and about to lose his footing. The lanky apprentice struggled to maintain balance and he placed the next paw higher up still, somewhat regaining control. He hauled himself into the lowest branch that would hold his weight and huffed, relieved that he had finally completed the climb.

"I'm not exactly an easy mentor. I'll work you until you're tired, you'll practice moves until you get it right, and you'll be in practice battles in different situations. Are you sure you want me as your mentor?" Hawk asked again, passing the bush and scenting for any strange scents.
Sun climbed up and stood on a branch beside the one Hollowpaw was on. "See those creatures down there? Those are raccoons. They eat anything they can get their paws on. They nearly stole our food when we last encountered them," she spoke quietly as she pointed out three raccoons scrounging around through a fallen trash bin. "They're eating out of that weird, grey thing. It's filled to twoleg stuff, so they have their attention on that. What I'm going to do, is jump down in front of them. If they run, I'll chase after them. If they fight, I'll fight them like I would with a fox."

Mintpaw nodded. "I'm sure! I wanna work hard!"
Hollowpaw nodded. "Raccoons. I see. Should I stay here and watch?" he asked, laying down on the branch so he could study the animals closer.

"You may join if you'd like, if they attack that is," Sun watched their movement before leaping down with a loud yowl. One raccoon ran, but the other two went after the ginger she-cat. Unsheathing her claws, she leaped back before dashing forward, knocking one over and slashing another on it's shoulder. She spun and watched the two raccoons, before growling out a warning. When one tried going after her again, she dodged to the side again, and took the chance to deal a few blows and letting the raccoon escape. Only one remained.

Hollowpaw decided to join in the fight. He jumped down from the tree, aiming to land on the last raccoon's back. He missed slightly, hissing in pain as one of his paws struck the ground, but with his others he made himself busy with slashing the raccoon's pelt. The hair along his spine was standing up straight, betraying the fright he was feeling.

Sun slashed her claws on the raccoon's nose, making it hiss in pain and run off. She chased after in, coming back with a smile on her face. "It's gone for good, it went across a Thunderpath. You did well Hollowpaw," She tilted her head. "How is your paw though? You missed your target and landed on the forest floor.

Hollowpaw had his paw held in the air, not keen on putting his wait on it. "It hurts," he answered honestly, frowning. "It isn't severely damaged though, I don't think. Ah, I'll try to aim better next time." He thought about how he would have had to modify his jump in order to have a smoother landing.

"If a suggestion helps, watch how your opponent moves before timing your jumps. Knowing how they move give you an advantage," she looked at the apprentice worriedly. "Will you be ok Hollowpaw?" Sun asked, tilting her head.

"Okay, I will remember that," Hollowpaw said, noting down what she said. Then he looked back at his paws. "I'm sure it will be fine after I rest it, don't worry. Shall we keep going?"

"I believe we've walked far enough, so let's head back." Sun flicked her tail and started walking. Storm had returned with a hunting patrol, the prey creating a small pile. Soul and Dew's patrol had returned and already created nests, and Oddkit was using the extra moss as a ball. Hawk was still out on a patrol with Mintpaw.

Hollowpaw nodded and followed her back. Burningsky tucked into her meal of choice. Mintpaw was still on patrol with Hawk. Dawnscar and Icepetal were talking.

Hawk stopped, glaring as he spotted something moving. "Mintpaw, we found something," he said quietly, unsheathing his claws.

Mintpaw's head shot up and she unsheathed her claws, crouching low. "What is it?" she whispered, prepared to follow his orders.

"I'm not sure, but-" Hawk turned towards Mintpaw and grabbed her scruff, pulling her back as an adder landed where the apprentice used to stand. "Adders, let me handle this Mintpaw. Stay back and watch around you, or climb a tree." He dropped her and stood in front of her, growling at the adder. With a snarl, he leapt at it, landing on it's body and batting it's head as it turned to strike at him.

Mintpaw backed up quickly, startled by the snake. She dashed for the nearest tree and scurried up it, keeping an eye on Hawk. "Careful down there!" she called, even though she knew he'd probably be fine.

Hawk tripped as he was tangled in the adder's body, making sure to keep track of the head. When he saw that the adder was going to strike once more, he lurched and bit down on its throat before it bit him. The tom didn't let go until the adder went limp, he stood up, panting. "Adders. Never liked them, glad they aren't in our territory."

"Is it safe to come back down? Was that the only one?" Mintpaw called down to him, letting out a relieved breath. For a second there he looked like he had been in a tough spot, but of course, he pulled through, like a good fighter always did.
